The Apple TV is a solid and premium device that comes with a premium price tag and a tight integration with other Apple products thanks to… being an Apple product. And it promises to bring a premium experience to users.

But it doesn’t determine the output sound quality of your watching experience, which is something that a Bluetooth speaker will perform greatly.

Can you use a Bluetooth speaker with Apple TV?

You can totally connect your Bluetooth speaker to your Apple TV just like any other Bluetooth device. The actual process is rather simple and can be done in minutes.

Imagine this: you just bought your new and shiny Apple TV. You finished plugging the Apple TV into your TV and providing it the power source it needed, and now you really want to sit down and enjoy your favorite content.

And you realized: The visual is fantastic thanks to your excellent TV, but the audio is lacking, or may straight up suck coming from the speakers of the TV. This is when you need a dedicated speaker system to level up the listening experience.

And Apple knows this, and the Apple TV lets you connect an external speaker using AV cables or HDMI cables. But even better, you can connect a Bluetooth speaker to the Apple TV with little effort.

Connect a Bluetooth speaker to your Apple TV

Connect

With this instruction, you can connect your Bluetooth speaker to your Apple TV just like any other Bluetooth device in general.

Here are the steps:

  • Step 1: Get your Bluetooth speaker ready for connection. You can find the instruction to do so in the manuals that came with the speaker.

Generally, the press and hold the main button on the speaker method works on most, or at least, many Bluetooth speakers.

  • Step 2: Get to your Apple TV. Now navigate to Settings, then Remotes and Devices, and choose Bluetooth.

Your Apple TV will now scan and find nearby available Bluetooth devices

  • Step 3: The band of your Bluetooth speaker’s name should show up on the list. Now just choose to connect it.

Disconnect

Here is how to disconnect your Bluetooth speaker from your Apple TV:

  • Step 1: Just head back to Settings, then Remotes and Devices, and choose Bluetooth again.
  • Step 2: Now choose your Bluetooth speaker name, and then hit Unpair Device.

Can you connect 2 Bluetooth speakers to the Apple TV at the same time?

Unfortunately, for now, connecting 2 Bluetooth speakers to the Apple TV at the same time isn’t possible.

With the old models of the Apple TV, there is only Bluetooth 4.0, which doesn’t support multiple Bluetooth speakers at all. And with the newer Apple TV 4K, although there is Bluetooth 5.0, for some reasons you will find the connecting experience lacking.

When connecting, you may encounter the problem that sound only comes from 1 speaker only.

Here is the amount of Bluetooth accessories that can simultaneously connect to the Apple TV:

  • 1 Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote
  • 1 Bluetooth keyboard
  • 4 Made for iOS (MFi) Bluetooth controllers.

If you are currently connecting to a Bluetooth audio accessory, you can only connect to 1 MFi Bluetooth controller.

Get help

If for some reason you can’t connect your Bluetooth speaker to your Apple TV or it loses the connectivity while in use, try to follow these steps to see if the situation improves. This is for both the Apple TV HD and the Apple TV 4K:

Range

Check if the Bluetooth speaker is within the range of the Apple TV. Although Bluetooth speakers generally have impressive ranges, the closer is still the better.

Interference

Bluetooth is just another wireless connecting protocol, and just like Wifi, there are many things, particularly devices that emit wireless signal, that can interfere with your Bluetooth connection.

Far distance combining with interference results in worse connection. So make sure there is no interference.

Power

If your Bluetooth speakers are low on power, it’s performance will get worse. So make sure your Bluetooth is fully charged, or just keep it plugged in if it is indeed low in power.

Software

Check to see if the software of your Bluetooth speaker is up to date and meets the requirements to connect to the Apple TV.

You could try moving your Apple TV closer to your TV.

Pair and unpair

Head to Settings, then Remotes and Devices, and choose Bluetooth.

If the Bluetooth speaker’s name shows up but you can’t connect to it, in the above-mentioned steps, hit Unpair device, and then try to connect the speaker again.

If all of the above steps don’t help and you need more help connecting your Bluetooth speaker to the Apple TV, connect to the manufacturer of the Bluetooth speaker.
