Is Epix Free with Amazon Prime?

Can you avail of Epix on Amazon Prime for free? Long story short, no. Epix is available on Amazon Prime but you cannot get Epix as part of the Amazon Prime Video or Prime membership package. Instead, it’s an add-on channel with a fee.

The Epix service is sold by most traditional multi-channel video programming distributors—cable TV, satellite dish TV, and digital TV with a timeslot format instead of video-on-demand—as a traditional TV network with its own original shows and shows from MGM, Lions Gate, and Paramount.

However, it also has a VOD-like and Netflix-like service present with its Epix app.

Is Epix Free with Amazon Prime?

No. Epix is available with Amazon Prime but with a nominal fee attached to it as an add-on channel to the streaming platform. According to Amazon Prime and its devices like the FireStick, Epix is available as an add-on channel for Prime Video.

This statement came about 6 months after Epix was announced as a Roku Channel as well. To add the Epix VOD service with your Amazon Prime platform, you need to pay $5.99 per month for it outside of what you’re paying for your Amazon Prime membership.

Epix isn’t free on Amazon Prime and the Amazon Fire TV Stick, in short. You need both an Amazon Prime Video membership plus an Epix subscription. This is also what allows FireStick access to Netflix despite being a competitor.

Is Epix Free Anywhere Else?

Epix is technically free with Hulu. Anyone with a Hulu subscription can get Epix (that is, Paramount/MGM/LionsGate) content in terms of film and original TV programming as part of the package. This is uncut, uncensored, and ad-free subscription content for Hulu members.

You can also get a livestream of the network version of Epix through services like Sling.tv and PlayStation Vue. The catch here is that they’re like catching the channel on cable TV. You have to catch movies at certain timeslots instead of watching them as video-on-demand or VOD.

Finally, if you have the Epix network or channel available on your premium cable or satellite dish plan, you can avail for free the Epix VOD service on the Epix website or Epix app without paying for the monthly $5.99 bill.

Epix is a Service That’s a Long-Time Coming

Since the 1950s, Paramount Pictures have been involved in the paid TV industry. Their experience helped shape and mold Epix as it known today with the help of its partnership with Viacom companies MGM and Lions Gate. It basically adapted its past paradigms to a new digital reality.

Back in 1953 to 1961, the Paramount-owned Telemeter served as an expensive yet ambitious theater TV system. It transmitted closed-circuit TV to customers instead of broadcast frequencies. It involves purchasing broadcasts by inserting coins unto a collection box like in an arcade.

Is Epix a VOD Service or a Cable Channel?

Epix is a little bit of Column A and a little bit of Column B. It was founded back in 2009 as a collaborative channel venture for Paramount, MGM, and Lions Gate films. It then evolved and started making its own original programming like Netflix does now or HBO did down the line.

It has the Epix network on cable and satellite as well as a VOD or streaming Epix service online. If you already have the channel on your cable subscription you can legally view ePix content via VOD on the Internet. Or you can subscribe to Epix VOD for $5.99.

What Content Can You Watch on Epix Anyway?

Epix offers original programming such as the Godfather of Harlem, Chapelwaite, Pennyworth, From, Billy the Kid, Perpetual Grace LTD, and Berlin Station as well as A Quiet Place, Snake Eyes, Scream, and so forth. You can watch the Hunger Games franchise in its entirety, including Mockingjay Part 1 and 2.

It also has available award-winning or blockbuster movies such as The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, Top Five, Selma, Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation, and Interstellar. Indeed, ePix is also home to Wolf of Wall Street, World War Z, Star Trek: Into Darkness, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

You can also look forward to hits from the past decade like Robocop (2014), Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, God’s Not Dead, Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and Transformers: Age of Extinction.

The “Everything Else” of Hollywood Entertainment

While Disney has Disney+ and Warner Bros. has HBO Max, everything else in modern cinema—as spearheaded by film giants MGM, Paramount, and Lions Gate—can be found on ePix. (Almost) everything not related to Marvel, DC, Star Wars, and Harry Potter can be found here.

Epix is the kitchen sink of Hollywood entertainment, filled with movies you weren’t aware were intellectual properties of the big three partners responsible for the network and VOD service. It also has far-reaching deals with many companies.

This includes Time Warner Cable, Verizon FiOS, Mediacom Communications, Cox Communications, Charter Communications, Bright House Networks, AT&T U-verse, Dish Network, and Sling.tv.

The Epix Network and Epix Now

The Netflix version of Epix is Epix Now while the network or channel version of Epix is Epix. It didn’t start off as a VOD provider but instead branched out into one, such that people are now searching on Google whether it’s part of the Amazon Prime package or is a Roku Channel.

Each digital platform offers an archive of VODs as well as livestreams of linear Epix TV channels on PlayStation Vue and Sling.tv. The livestreams come free with your Sling and Vue subscriptions but don’t give you the flexibility of VOD found on Epix Now.

Epix also provides four multiplex channels found on feeds for Amazon Video and Epix Now. As for Roku and Apple users, they only receive the primary Epix channel and the East Coast feed, so be forewarnd regarding that.

Some Final Words

So is Epix free with Amazon Prime like with Hulu? Or is it more like a Roku deal involving add-on channels or network services that you need to have existing subscriptions for?  With Amazon Prime, it’s an add-on channel. If you want it as part of a package, avail of a Hulu subscription instead.

It’s sold as either an a la carte digital movie service or as a collection of premium services by traditional multi-channel video providers. You can get it by DirecTV or over-the-top MVPDs on Sling.tv. It’s also available on YouTube TV, FuboTV, and Philo.
